Seasonal allergies are unfortunately part of living in Oklahoma. Did you know that they are just as common in our furry friends as they are in people? It’s true! Itchy, scratchy, coughing, hacking, and irritability are all symptoms of seasonal allergies. Read below for what you can do to prevent them:
- Identify the symptoms: If you are seeing any of these symptoms in your pets, cats included, then it may be time to take action.
- Over-the-counter allergy medications: Many OTC allergy medications are also safe to use in dogs and cats. We usually start with Benadry and can add Zyrtec or Claritan The generics work really well too! Contact us for dosages and directions.
- Medicated Shampoos: Especially if your pet is itchy or their skin is red (especially the belly), medicated baths can drastically reduce symptoms. They can be purchased from any local veterinary office and are very simple to use. Give them a bath like normal, however, swap out their usual shampoo with a soothing medicated shampoo instead. They even contain vitamins to make their coats shiny!
- Be careful with their diet: Pets with seasonal allergies tend to be sensitive to changes in food and/or very rich food. Lay off the bacon bits and stay on their old, faithful food to prevent these issues. We may even need to switch to a hypoallergenic food. We are more than happy to evaluate any foods and/or treats you use and give you some tailor-made recommendations.
